OnePlus launches their new flagship smartphone with an all new design, but like its predecessors, continues to sport high-end specs at a competitive price!
Chinese company OnePlus launched their new flagship smartphone at an event in London today (16th May 2018): the OnePlus 6, and aims to continue the feat of the company’s previous flagship devices by offering the specifications and features of rival flagships, but at a considerably lower price.
The OnePlus 6’s design resembles some of it’s contemporaries with glass on the front and the back (ditching the curved aluminium of it’s previous smartphones), a near bezel less display and the all divisive “notch” (first introduced by the Essential Phone and later popularised by the iPhone X). Rest assured, there is an option to obscure the notch for those who may find it bothersome.
The new smartphone sports a 6.28in AMOLED display with a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels giving a rather odd aspect ratio of 19:9. The phone is powered by the latest and greatest Snapdragon 845 CPU from Qualcom, the Adreno 630 GPU and a 3300mAh battery.
Customers will also have the choice of three colours; Mirror Black, Midnight Black or Silk White as well as a choice of 6GB or 8GB RAM and three storage configurations; 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB. The phone has no expandable storage so customers should choose their storage configuration wisely.
The new dual 16MP + 20MP camera system features Optical Image Stabilisation and aims to improve on speed, low light shots and portrait mode. Audiophiles can rejoice as the headphone jack has been retained. This is the first phone from OnePlus to be equipped with water resistance, though oddly has no official IP rating of any kind.
As usual, the OnePlus 6 runs OxygenOS, the company’s modified version of Android and the latest version of Android (8.1 Oreo) at that. Interestingly this is one of the few select phones that is eligible for the Android 9 P beta test.
The OnePlus 6 goes on sale on 22nd May with a starting price of £469 and will be available directly from OnePlus or through O2 in the UK.
